Vietnam’s Economy Rockets 8.22% in Q3 2025 Despite U.S. Tariff Pressures

Published October 5, 2025

Strong Growth Amid External Headwinds

Vietnam’s economy expanded at an annualised rate of 8.22% in the third quarter of 2025 — up from 7.96% in the preceding quarter.

This performance marks the strongest quarterly growth since 2011 (excluding the Covid-recovery bounce in 2022).

Challenges: Tariffs & Natural Disasters

Even as a 20% U.S. import tariff on Vietnamese goods came into force on August 7 (mid-quarter), Vietnam still managed to accelerate growth.

Moreover, the quarter was battered by eight storms, including Typhoon Bualoi, which alone inflicted VND 16.5 trillion (~US$625.5 million / RM2.6 billion) in losses.

Year-to-Date & Outlook
  • Over the first nine months of 2025, GDP rose 7.84% compared to the same period in 2024.

  • Vietnam is targeting full-year growth between 8.3% and 8.5%, outpacing forecasts by the World Bank (6.6%) and IMF (6.5%).

  • However, risks remain: external pressures, slower reforms, and worsening climate disruptions could dampen momentum in the closing months.

  • Inflation has also ticked upward: 3.27% year-on-year over Jan–Sept, and 3.38% in September.

Conclusion

Vietnam’s robust Q3 performance underscores the country’s growing economic resilience and adaptability. Despite global trade headwinds, tariff pressures, and severe weather disruptions, the nation continues to attract investment and maintain export strength. Sustained reforms, infrastructure development, and policy support will be crucial to preserve this momentum heading into 2026. If managed well, Vietnam is poised to remain one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies in the years ahead.
